The Babie Machine
The Babie Machine was a residency project from first year. I was based in the abandoned tram depot at Shrubhill, Edinburgh, which was filled with elaborate graffiti. The walls were almost like a graphic novel or 3D storybook so I took text and characters from this graffiti and reworked it to form a story. I created the characters from bin bags and old paper, resembling the litter found in the site. The characters were taken back to the site and photographed in their 'natural' environment and these photographs were placed together with the mono-printed text in a handmade book. The collection of 3D monsters and pages from the book were installed for an end of year exhibition.
I find that the collation and use of text in my work is a recurring theme and something I really enjoy working with, as it all relates to an excitement of not knowing exactly what a sentence is referring to. This year I am very interested in recreating these 'alternate' realities that exist in spaces.
